The Washington Commanders have a new head coach. They hired Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
The Commander’s job had been open since they fired Ron Rivera following a 4-13 record. Rivera spent 4 years with Washington but they never made the playoffs. He ended his tenure at a disappointing 26-40-1, a winning percentage of .395.
Washington took their time looking for their new head coach. They decided Dan Quinn was the best coach to take over the team. He has Head Coaching experience with the Atlanta Falcons, lasting from 2015 to 2020. Atlanta went to the postseason twice with Quinn, 2016 and 2017. Atlanta advanced to Super Bowl 51, blowing a 28-3 lead. Quinn was let go following a 0-5 start to the 2020 season. Atlanta finished with a 4-12 record that year.
Since 2021, Quinn has been the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. This past season, Quinn’s defense ranked as the 4th best in the NFL, giving up 299.7 yards per game. The Cowboys didn’t allow teams to use their passing game that much, producing 187.4 yards per game.
When it came to the rush defense, the Cowboys couldn’t stop the run. Teams were able to run the football to tire out the Cowboys’ defense to keep drives alive. The Cowboys gave up 112.4 rush yards per game, ranking 16th in the league.
Quinn is probably the best candidate. The surprising part is they passed on Eric Bieniemy who served as their offensive coordinator. Bieniemy has been an offensive coordinator in the league for the past 6 years. Last season was his first in Washington. Bieniemy is overdue for a Head Coaching position.
