Welcome To The Mile High City Pete Carmichael Jr.

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos finished last season at 8-9.  The Broncos are looking at ways to improve the team, especially on offense.  The Broncos hired Pete Carmichael Jr. as a senior offensive assistant.

The Broncos struggled on offense this past season.  They averaged 298.4 yards per game, 26th in the NFL.  The Broncos passed for 298.4 yards per game, 24th in the NFL.  When it came to scoring, the Broncos put up 21 points on average, 19th in the NFL.

The bright spot for Denver was running the football.  They rushed for 106.5 yards per game, ranking 18th in the league.  They didn’t have a 1,000-yard rusher for the 4th straight season.  The last player to rush for 1,000 or more yards for Denver was Phillip Lindsay who ran for 1,011 in 2019.

The problem with Denver was the offensive line.  They didn’t create enough holes for the running backs to run through.  The offensive line wasn’t able to protect quarterbacks Russell Wilson or Jared Stidham as they were sacked 52 times.

Carmichael spent the past 15 years as the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.  The Head Coach of the Denver Broncos Sean Payton worked with him for 12 years.

This past season, the Saints, ranked 14th in the league in total offense, gaining 337.2 yards per game.  The Saints threw for 234.7 yards per game, 11th in the NFL. They were 21st when it came to the running game, averaging 102.5 yards per game.  The Saints finished with a 9-8 record.  New Orleans decided it was time to let go of Carmichael following the year.

The Broncos still have offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.  Carmichael could help Lombardi and Payton during games to have Denver in the right offensive plays. Head coach Sean Payton is going to keep calling the plays. The Broncos want to be a better team next year and end their playoff drought.
