Zack Wilson Still The Jets’ Starting Quarterback Even Though They Added Veteran  Trevor Siemian

By Jordan Long

The New York Jets stand at 1-2.  There was so much anticipation for this team before the season kicked off because of the signing of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.  Rodgers lasted only 4 plays and is now out for the season with a torn Achilles.   Zack Wilson is their starter. He will remain the starter even though they added veteran quarterback Trevor Siemian.

Wilson has played every game this season throwing for 467 yards and 2 touchdowns.  The problem with Wilson is he is not reading the defenses well.  Those passes are tipped away or intercepted.  His completion percentage is at 52.4% and he has tossed 4 interceptions.

Last week against the New England Patriots Wilson struggled once again.  He was 18 of 36 passing for 157 yards.  The good news is he didn’t throw an interception.  On the downside though, he didn’t have a touchdown either.  The Jets lost the game 15-10.

The Jets knew they needed another backup quarterback for Wilson. The backup to Wilson is Tim Boyle who is in his 5th season.  He has played for Green Bay, Detroit, and Chicago.  He started 3 games in his career coming in the 2021 season for Detroit.  The Lions lost all of those games.  His stats don’t jump out.  Boyle attempted 106 passes while completing 66 of them for 574 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions.  At least he had some NFL experience.  The Jets knew they needed another quarterback because 2 on the roster isn’t enough.  They signed Trevor Siemian

Siemian enters his 9th NFL season.  In his career, Siemian is 13-17 as a starting quarterback.  He has thrown for 7,027 yards and 42 touchdowns.  He reads the field fairly well but he forces the ball into coverage with 28 interceptions.  This was a solid move for the Jets.

With the Jets adding Siemian, questions swirled about if Wilson would be replaced.  Head Coach Robert Saleh is still sticking with Wilson.  According to CBSsports.com, Saleh said, “He’s here, he gives us our best chance to win, and as coaches, we’re going to do everything we can to help him.”

Siemian gives the Jets depth.  He may not see the field at all this year unless Wilson is hurt or struggles.  The Jets now have a solid backup quarterback who knows the NFL game. They can now focus on being a better football team and improve their record in hopes of earning a playoff spot this year.
