With High Expectations, Manager Aaron Boone Agrees To A Contract Extension With New York

By Jordan Long

The New York Yankees were eliminated in the Wild Card game by the Boston Red Sox 6-2.  After that loss, questions swirled about Manager Aaron Boone’s job future.  It might have been his last game managing New York. Instead, New York decided to extend his contract for the next three years with a club option for 2025.

Boone has managed the New York Yankees for the past 4 years.  He didn’t have any managerial experience before he was hired.    The knowledge he had about Major League Baseball was when he played in MLB from 1997 to 2009.  He played for New York in 2003.  New York took a chance on him.

Boone has been successful with New York with a record of 328-218, a winning percentage of .601.  New York went to the postseason every year under him to this point.  In most cities, that is an accomplishment.  Not many franchises are able to have a new manager come in and earn a playoff spot every year.  New York is not like every team.  They expect a World Series each year.  Boone has yet to deliver that.  The furthest New York went was the 2019 American League Championship Series, but they lost to the Houston Astros in 6 games.

New York is hoping he can lead this team to a World Series championship.  According to ESPN.com, New York Yankees Owner Hal Steinbrenner said, “We have a person and manager in Aaron Boone who possesses the baseball acumen and widespread respect in our clubhouse to continue to guide us forward. As a team and as an organization, we must grow, evolve and improve. We need to get better. Period. I know Aaron fully embraces our expectations of success, and I look forward to drawing on his intelligence, instincts, and leadership in pursuit of our next World Series championship.”

The Yankees haven’t won the World Series since 2009.  New York has put high expectations on Boone and the rest of his coaching staff for the future.  Boone knows this.  If Boone fails to earn a World Series before 2025, he could be gone.  New York may also fire him if he fails to reach the playoffs.  New York is trusting Boone is the right man for the job.  At least they are showing they have confidence in him, otherwise, they wouldn’t have kept him.
