Welcome To Miami Quarterback Mike Glennon

By Jordan Long

The Miami Dolphins face the New York Jets on Sunday.  They still have slim playoff hopes.  The Dolphins must beat the  Jets and they also need the Patriots to lose to the Bills which would clinch a playoff spot for them.  If the Patriots win, that will eliminate the Dolphins from playoff contention. Even so, the Dolphins decided to sign veteran quarterback Mike Glennon to the practice squad.

The quarterbacks for Miami aren’t healthy.  Tua Tagovailoa is 8-5 this season, passing for 3,548 yards with 25 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Tagovailoa is in concussion protocol.  There is no word on when he will be back as they are trying to get him healthy.

Backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater started 2 games in place of  Tagovailoa.  His record is 0-2 passing for 683 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions.  Bridgewater may not be able to play this week since he is dealing with a dislocated pinky finger.  With that, the Dolphins only had one healthy quarterback on the roster rookie and seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson.

Thompson’s record this season is 0-1.  He has thrown for 382 yards and 1 touchdown.  He is a young player learning the offense and has been picked off 3 times.  The Dolphins knew they needed to sign another quarterback.  It would have been very difficult to play this weekend’s game with only Thompson as the only healthy quarterback.

Glennon is a veteran quarterback who brings in 8 years of NFL experience.  He has played for Tampa Bay, Chicago, Arizona,  the then Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville, and the New York Giants.  His overall record as an NFL starter is 6-25.  Glennon has been mostly used as a backup quarterback in the league.   Glennon has tossed for 7,025 yards, 47 touchdowns, and 35 interceptions.

Glennon gives the Dolphins options at quarterback.  This week gives him a chance to know and understand the Dolphins’ playbook in case his number is called.    It is not guaranteed he will suit up on Sunday depending on the health of Bridgewater.  The Dolphins look to earn a playoff spot for the first time since 2016 when they were bounced out in the Wild Card Round.
