Taysom Hill Stays Put, Agrees To A 2-Year Contract With The New Orleans Saints

By Jordan Long

The New Orleans Saints agreed to a new contract with quarterback Taysom Hill.  The agreement is for 2 years, worth $21 million which includes $16 million guaranteed.  He is expected to compete with Jameis Winston to become the backup this season.  If not, the Saints will still use him on special formations on offense.

Hill has been with the Saints since 2017.  He has been the 3rd quarterback on the depth chart but the Saints use him on running plays.  Hill comes into the game when the Saints line up in the wildcat formation.  He has the ability to throw the football or run with it.  In his short career with the Saints, Hill is 6 of 13 passing for 119 yards and 1 interception.   That is not enough for him to deserve the new deal.

The best part of his game is his running ability.  When he is on the field, the defense has to keep an eye on him.  They know he is going to keep the football and run with it.  Hill totaled 352 rushing yards with an average yards per rush of 5.5 yards.  He scored 3 touchdowns.  When Hill rushes, he protects the football and has lost 1 fumble.

According to ESPN, Hill said, “This gives me a clear trajectory and opportunity for me to compete and to be the guy in New Orleans in [2021] if Drew decides to be done. And if he’s not, then we’ll figure out another contract or my role will continue to be the way it is. This was a way to prevent me to get to free agency next year, and it created some structure for both me and my family, as well as the organization.”

The Saints know Hill is a unique player for them.   They wanted to keep him in New Orleans long term with the goal of winning the Super Bowl.   It is possible that if this is the last year for Drew Brees, Hill has his chance to lead the football team in 2021.   If he fails to do so, he will be a free agent in 2022 and the Saints don’t have to re-sign him depending on his play.  This is a lot of money to pay a quarterback who has only thrown 13 passes in the NFL.
