Tampa Bay Bolsters The Backfield, Agrees To A Contract With LeSean McCoy

By Jordan Long

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers bolstered their running back position, agreeing to a 1-year deal with LeSean McCoy.  The terms of the deal were not announced.

McCoy is entering his 12th year in the NFL.  The Buccaneers will be his 4th team.  Last season he appeared in 13 games for the Kansas City Chiefs.  McCoy didn’t have his best year but he still caught 28 passes for 181 yards and 1 touchdown.  On the ground, McCoy rushed for 465 yards and 4 touchdowns. In the postseason, he was not used during their run to the Super Bowl.

Kansas City decided at the end of the year not to reach a new contract with McCoy allowing him to be a free agent.  Not many teams showed interest.  Finally, Tampa Bay decided he is worth the risk.

According to ESPN, McCoy’s agent Drew Rosenhaus said, “He’s very excited to play with established vets like [Tom] Brady and Gronk (Rob Gronkowski) in trying to win another championship.”

McCoy brings experience to the team.  He is going to be the veteran running back and adds to the talent of Ke’Shawn Vaughn, Ronald Jones II and, Dare Ogunbowale.  McCoy is expected to be the change of pace back because of his running style.

Tampa Bay knows to make a deep run in the playoffs, the running game is going to be key for them.  They haven’t had a consistent rusher in the backfield since Doug Martin.  He left the team in 2017.

McCoy can help this team win by blocking for Tom Brady, rushing the football, and catching the football out of the backfield.  Those runs and catches will help Tampa Bay move the chains downfield as well as scoring touchdowns. This is a low risk, high reward move for Tampa Bay as they look for their first playoff appearance since 2007.
