Sean McVay Hinting At Stepping Away After Super Bowl 56 Victory

By Jordan Long

The L.A. Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl 56, 23-20. Once the game was over speculation is Rams’ Head Coach Sean McVay may step away from the Rams.  McVay shouldn’t since he has been very successful.

McVay took over as the Rams’ Head Coach on January 12, 2017.  He was Washington’s offensive coordinator from 2014 to 2016.  McVay replaced Jeff Fisher who was with the Rams organization from 2012 to 2016.  Fisher went 31-45-1 with the team but didn’t reach the postseason.  He was fired 14 games into the 2016 season when the Rams stood at 4-9.

The Rams expected better results with McVay as their Head Coach.  When McVay took the job he was only 31 years old.  That was a risk.  Most teams shy away from a coach so young only because they don’t have a lot of experience in the NFL.  The Rams were hoping McVay would lead this team for a long time and turn the franchise around.

McVay has done that.  The Rams have gone an impressive 55-26 under McVay to this point, a winning percentage of .679.  They have earned a playoff spot every year but one, 2019.  That year, they ended 9-7.  McVay has coached them to 2 Super Bowl appearances, Super Bowl 53 which ended in disappointment, dropping the game to the New England Patriots 13-3.  Of course this past Sunday he was on the other side, enjoying the win after his team won.

McVay hasn’t decided if he is coming back next year.  According to cbssports.com, McVay said, “I know I love football and I’m so invested in this thing. And I’m in the moment right now. But at some point, too, if you said, ‘What do you want to be able to do?’ I want to be able to have a family, and I want to be able to spend time with them.”

McVay will take his time to enjoy the moment.  It is difficult to think about the future after winning the biggest game of his career.  The truth is he will take the next few weeks to decide what he wants to do.  Why wouldn’t McVay want to try to win the whole thing again?  Yes, it is tough since the NFL hasn’t had a back-to-back Super Bowl winner since New England did it in Super Bowl 38 and 39.  Then again, McVay wants to be able to be with his family which is understandable since the NFL year is a grind with virtually no time off. It is basically a 365 day a year job.  He will do what feels right but it would be super surprising for him to walk away now.
