Ryan Fitzpatrick Ahead Of Josh Rosen In Miami Dolphins’ Starting Quarterback Battle During Training Camp

By Jordan Long

The Miami Dolphins are looking to improve on their 7-9 record.  They play their first preseason game on August 8th against the Atlanta Falcons.  Miami’s first regular season game is a month later when they host the Baltimore Ravens. The Dolphins are going to use the preseason to figure out who will be the starting quarterback.

The Dolphins made moves in the off season to upgrade the quarterback position.  Ryan Tannehill had been the Dolphins starting quarterback since 2012.  His record was 42-46.  Miami never reached the postseason with him under center.  They traded him to Tennessee on March 15 for a 6th round pick.

Miami replaced Tannehill with journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick who agreed to a 2-year deal.  Miami wasn’t done.  They acquired Josh Rosen on April 26th from the Arizona Cardinals for the 62nd pick in the NFL draft which Arizona used to select wide receiver Andy Isabella.  Arizona also received a 2020 5th round pick.  This was a surprise move for Arizona since Rosen finished his rookie year but the Cardinals are rebuilding with new Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury.  They decided it was best to cut ties with Rosen.

The Dolphins announced this week Fitzpatrick is the leader to be the starting quarterback.  This is not a surprise.  Fitzpatrick is the veteran who has played the NFL game for 13 seasons.  In those years Fitzpatrick tossed for 29,357 yards and 190 touchdowns.  He takes chances down the field and those are intercepted with 148 thrown.

According to ESPN Miami Dolphins Head Coach Brian Flores said “It’s pretty clear to me that Ryan Fitzpatrick is leading the way.  He’s done that in a lot of areas, from leadership to production on the field to the meeting rooms to the walk-throughs. This is an ongoing competition, but right now he’s leading the way.”

This isn’t anything Rosen needs to worry about right now.  Flores is looking at it as if they were to play a game this week Fitzpatrick would be the starter.   Rosen will have his opportunity to show what he can do during preseason games.  If he outperforms Fitzpatrick, then he will be the starting quarterback for Miami this year.  This is a battle to watch for in training camp for the Miami Dolphins. It should end by the 3rd preseason game when starters play the 1st half which is the dress rehearsal for the regular season.
