Rob Gronkowski To Mull Future After Super Bowl 53

By Jordan Long

On Sunday, the New England Patriots will take on the L.A. Rams in Super Bowl 53.   New England Patriots’ tight end Rob Gronkowski hasn’t decided on his future.   He will take his time in the offseason and decide what is best for him.  According to ESPN, Gronkowski said, “That’s a tricky question. You’re trying to get around me. You’re just trying to get you some answers over there, baby. But, like I said, I don’t know. I haven’t done that sit-down yet. I’ve got to do that sit-down. About two weeks after [the season]. Then I’ll know.”  He has one more year left on his current contract.

Gronkowski is one of Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady’s favorite targets.   He is a matchup nightmare for any defense.  His size at 6 foot 6 inches allows him to outjump defensive backs.  Defenses can’t cover him with a linebacker because he is too fast.  Brady knows when he throws Gronkowski the football he will make plays and he should on Sunday as well.

In his career to this point, Gronkowski has 7,861 receiving yards and 79 touchdowns in the regular season.  His average yards per catch is an impressive 15.1 yards.  In the postseason is where an athlete wants to play at a high level.  The Patriots have made the postseason 9 times with him on the roster.   Gronkowski shines in the playoffs with a total of 1,076 receiving yards.  He is the first tight end in NFL history with 1,000+ yards in his playoff career.   Gronkowski added 12 touchdowns.

The reason he should retire is his health.  Gronkowski hasn’t played a full 16 game season since 2011.  He also played 15 games twice in his career which was 2014 and 2015. Gronkowski appeared in 13 games this year but missed 3 because of back and ankle injuries.

If Gronkowski decides to hang it up after the Super Bowl, he goes down as one of the top tight ends to ever play.   Gronkowski has 2 Super Bowl rings and could add a 3rd if the Patriots win on Sunday.  He has been voted into the Pro Bowl 5 times and placed on the NFL All-Pro team 4 times.  There isn’t anything left for him to prove in the NFL.
