One of the all-time best Colts’ receivers decided it was time to leave the game of football. Reggie Wayne retired this past weekend after 14 NFL seasons. According to ESPN, Wayne said, “Yeah, I’m done. It was fun, but it’s time. It’s just time. Whenever you can admit that you’re done, you know you’re done.” How should we remember his career?

Reggie Wayne was the 30th overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2001 draft. In his first season he appeared in 13 games and had 345 yards receiving but didn’t catch a touchdown. The next year, he would catch his first NFL touchdown.   Wayne had a career year in the 2007 season with 1,510 yards and 10 touchdowns. His total career numbers are impressive with 1,070 receptions, 14,343 yards, and 82 touchdowns. This past offseason, the Colts decided to let him go. Wayne didn’t have anything else to prove in the game of football. His 1,070 receptions rank 7th all time and is 8th on the list for receiving yards.   He was voted to the Pro Bowl six times. Wayne was on the first team All Pro in 2010 and was selected on the second team All Pro twice. He won a Super Bowl ring with the Colts.

Wayne will be remembered as one of the most consistent wide receivers to ever play the game. The only achievement left is to be chosen for the Football Hall Of Fame. He will be eligible in 2021.   His body of work says that he is worthy of this honor. He should be selected on the first ballot.   If he isn’t a first ballot Hall Of Famer, Wayne will eventually be in the Pro Football Hall Of Fame.
