Quarterback Possibilities For The Dallas Cowboys While Tony Romo Is Out

The Dallas Cowboys are 2-0 after defeating the Philadelphia Eagles. They suffered a key injury in the game. Quarterback Tony Romo left the game with a broken collarbone which happened with 9:44 left in the third quarter. He will undergo tests today to see if he requires surgery but is going to be out eight to ten weeks. Who is going to lead this team?

Romo has been the Cowboys’ starter for ten years. He had a respectable beginning to the season. He threw for 551 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions, only fumbling once.

The Cowboys will go with Brandon Weeden at quarterback. Weeden has appeared in 29 games in his career, throwing for a total of 5,592 yards with 27 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. The passing yards and the touchdowns aren’t bad numbers but the problem is he can’t seem to avoid turning over the football. If Weeden wants to keep the job for a while, he must maintain possession of the football, otherwise that will equal more opportunities for the opposing teams’ offense to put points on the board.

According to ABCnews.com, Head Coach Jason Garret said, “We are going to run our offense. Obviously Tony’s a special player and a great leader for our football team for a number of years now. But guys have to go in there and play. Brandon did a good job today. He has done a good job in the past when he has opportunities to run our offense. Our standards are high for anybody who goes in and plays. He understands that. He will prepare well and play well.”

Weeden will be the guy to lead this football team. There are other free agent quarterbacks they could sign. Those include Tim Tebow, Rex Grossman, and Matt Flynn.

Tebow hasn’t played a regular season down in NFL since 2012. This isn’t a good option. Tebow isn’t an NFL quarterback because he isn’t accurate throwing the football. His completion percentage in his career is 47.9%. That is an awful number.

The last time Rex Grossman saw the football field was in 2011. He can win games but his problem has been turning the ball over. Grossman has thrown 60 interceptions in his career.

The best quarterback out there might be Matt Flynn. Flynn is a better passer than Tebow and Grossman. He has thrown for 2,541 yards and 17 touchdowns. Flynn is more protective with the football. He has only 11 interceptions. Flynn hasn’t appeared in a game since 2013 for the Green Bay Packers.

The Cowboys could search for a backup quarterback but Brandon Weeden should be given a chance.

What should the Cowboys do with their quarterback situation?
