Quarterback Daniel Jones Done For The Year, Giants Season Looks Pretty Much Over

By Jordan Long

On Sunday, the New York Giants were defeated by the Las Vegas Raiders by the score of 30-6. Their record now stands at 2-7, last in the NFC East Division. The Giants lost more than the game as quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a significant knee injury.  It is feared he tore his ACL.

Jones has been with the New York Giants since he was drafted in the first round, 6th overall in the 2019 draft.  Jones’ starting record including this year is a disappointing 22-36-1.  The only year the Giants had a winning record with him as quarterback was last year when he went 9-6-1.  The Giants advanced to the Divisional Round but lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 38-7.

This season, the Giants were anticipating even better results with Jones. It hasn’t happened yet.  The Giants sit a 2-7.  Jones looks like he is lost for the year.  This season Jones has been part of the problem, tossing for 909 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He has been a turnover machine with 6 interceptions, not what the Giants expected.

In his short career with the Giants, Jones has totaled 12,512 yards, 62 touchdowns, and 40 interceptions.  The problem with Jones is his injury history. In 2020, he missed 2 games dealing with a hamstring injury.  In 2021 Jones was limited to 11 games due to a neck injury.  The Giants were hoping a healthy Jones would lead them back to the playoffs.  At 2-6 entering yesterday’s game, the Giants don’t look like they are going anywhere.

Jones started the game, but he was injured with 14 minutes and 31 seconds left in the 2nd quarter. The Giants were only down 7-0 at that point.  There was plenty of time to get back into the game.  It didn’t happen as they dropped the game 30-6.  Tommy DeVito finished the game.   He was 15 of 20 passing for 175 yards and 1 touchdown.  He threw 2 interceptions.

According to ESPN.com, Head Coach Brian Daboll said about Jones, “Tough. You never want your guys to go down. He’s worked really hard to get back. It’s unfortunate.”

The Giants will move forward with DeVito as their quarterback.  The problem is he is the only quarterback on the roster.  They most likely need to activate Matt Barkley from the practice squad to be the backup but will also look at acquiring a free agent quarterback.  Either way though, this is another tough injury for Jones. The Giants at this point are most likely playing for a top 5 pick in the NFL draft.  It seems this season is lost.
