Quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s Waiting Game, Will A Team Take A Chance?

By Jordan Long

There is one big name quarterback left who is still unsigned, Colin Kaepernick. He opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers on March 3, 2017. Kaepernick may still reach a deal with a team but it will be after training camp starts. Why is he still on the market?

Kaepernick is a 6-year veteran in the league with all those years spent in San Francisco. He has thrown for a total of 12,271 yards, and 72 touchdowns. Kaepernick doesn’t take risks with the football and won’t throw into double coverage, tossing a total of 30 interceptions. That is a respectable touchdown to interception ratio.

Kaepernick makes it difficult for defenses to bring him down in the open field because of his ability to run the football with a total of 2,300 rushing yards in his career. Kaepernick added 13 touchdowns. The problem when he is running is he fumbles and defenses can knock the ball out of his hand with a total of 21 fumbles.

The biggest reason he doesn’t have a job in the NFL is Kaepernick is not a typical 5-step dropback quarterback nor does he run a typical pro style NFL offense. He is comfortable in a read-option offense, which is more of a college style. This offense gives Kaepernick the ability to read the defense and decide if he wants to throw the football, run with it, or hand it off to his running back. Many teams won’t use this type of offense because they don’t have a quarterback with the skill set.

Kaepernick can still play in the NFL. Teams should be looking at him because if his experience. Not many teams have a backup quarterback with 6 years in the NFL. Teams are waiting to see what training camp brings. If there are injuries at quarterback or they don’t like what they see at the backup position, a call should be made to Kaepernick. He is the best backup quarterback option out there. Hopefully a team will take a chance with Kaepernick.

Why do you think Colin Kaepernick is still out of a job?
