Quarterback Baker Mayfield Landing In Carolina?

By Jordan Long

The NFL Draft is about a week away with the first round on April 28th.  Baker Mayfield is still on the Cleveland Browns’ roster for now.  The Browns already have their quarterback of the future in Deshaun Watson. The Browns are looking to trade quarterback Mayfield.  One possible landing spot is the Carolina Panthers.

The Carolina Panthers have two quarterbacks on the current roster, Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker. Darnold is entering his 5th NFL season, his 2nd with Carolina.  Last year, Darnold started 11 games for the Panthers but his record was 4-7.  He passed for 2,527 yards and 9 touchdowns.

The problem with Darnold last year was throwing the ball into coverage.  He took chances tossing the ball into double or triple coverage.  Those were picked off with a total of 13.

P.J. Walker threw for 362 yards last year and 1 touchdown.  Walker took too many risks downfield throwing into coverage.  He was picked off 3 times.

Carolina may want to look to upgrade the quarterback position. They could use a veteran quarterback to push Darnold to win the starting job.  Mayfield could be that quarterback.

Mayfield ended his 4th NFL season, all with the Browns.  His numbers were down compared to 2020. Baker had 3,010 passing yards and 17 touchdowns but threw 13 interceptions.  The Browns went 6-8 with him as the starting quarterback. Overall, Mayfield’s record is 29-30.  He has thrown for 14,125 yards, 92 touchdowns, and 56 interceptions.   If the Browns want some high draft picks back, the Panthers won’t have an interest.

The Panthers, though, may not look to trade for Mayfield.  They own the #6 pick in the first-round.  The Panthers might draft a quarterback there.  Their options are Malik Willis, Matt Corral, and Kenny Pickett.  Of course, the Panthers could decide to go with an offensive lineman or another position of need other than quarterback.

The Panthers have options as they look to upgrade the team and improve on their 5-12 record.  Panthers’ General Manager Scott Fitterer will do what is best for the team moving forward.  They would like to be a playoff team in 2022.
