New York Giants Hit The Panic Button, Name Daniel Jones The Starting Quarterback

By Jordan Long

The New York Giants are 0-2.  They look for their 1st win of the season as they prepare to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.   New York decided in order to turn their season around, a switch under center is needed.  New York is going to start rookie Daniel Jones and bench Eli Manning for this week.

Manning’s season hasn’t been awful to this point.  He has tossed for 556 yards and 2 touchdowns.  His offensive line is protecting him and giving him time to look at the whole field to find his open wide receiver.  Manning has been sacked only twice this season.

The problem with Manning this year is his accuracy and interceptions. He is taking risks down the field which can be batted away by defenders.  He’s completed 62.9% of his passes.  Manning has also thrown 2 interceptions.

The Giants feel a change at quarterback is necessary 2 weeks into the season. According to ESPN, New York Giants Head Coach Pat Shurmur said, “Eli and I spoke this morning. I told him that we are making a change and going with Daniel as the starter. I also talked to Daniel. Eli was obviously disappointed, as you would expect, but he said he would be what he has always been, a good teammate, and continue to prepare to help this team win games. Daniel understands the challenge at hand, and he will be ready to play on Sunday.”

New York must feel their offensive struggles are on Manning when they aren’t.  The play calling hasn’t been great especially in the red zone.  New York has scored touchdowns on 60% of their drives inside the red zone. When New York drives inside the opponents’ 10-yard line, they are conservative and run the football.  They don’t let Manning use his arm to try to put points on the scoreboard for touchdowns. This is on the coaching staff.

The Giants are hitting the panic button.  It’s two weeks into the season and they are 2 games behind the Dallas Cowboys for 1st place in the NFC East.  This switch shouldn’t happen yet.  Jones is a rookie who the Giants took 6th overall in this years’ NFL Draft.  He may end up struggling and the Giants might slide further in the standings.  What will they do then?  It would be difficult to go back to Manning. Only time will tell if this move pays off but the Jones’ era starts this Sunday. 3
