Mike Shanahan To Coach The Miami Dolphins?

The Miami Dolphins have started interviewing for their head coaching job.   Mike Shanahan is scheduled to talk with the Dolphins today for the second time.   Should Shanahan even consider this job?

Mike Shanahan has been a head coach in the NFL for 20 years coaching three different teams, the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, and Washington Redskins.   He has a career record of 170-138 with two Super Bowl rings. The Super Bowl wins came when he coached the Denver Broncos. Shanahan is a veteran head coach. He didn’t coach the last two years. His previous coaching job was from 2010 to 2013 with the Washington Redskins. The Redskins only made the playoffs once with him in 2012.   They lost in the Wild Card round to the Seattle Seahawks 24-14.

The Dolphins ended 6-10 this season, but fired Head coach Joe Philbin after a 1-3 start. Tight ends Coach Dan Campbell was the interim head coach. He guided them to a 5-7 record which was better. On November 30th, Campbell decided to let go of Bill Lazor the offensive coordinator and replaced him with Zac Taylor.

The Dolphins have pieces that Shanahan can work with if he is offered the job. They have the quarterback in Ryan Tannehill. Shanahan is an offensive minded coach and the quarterback position is one of the most important pieces.   The problem with the Dolphins has been their offensive line. They gave up 45 sacks this season. Opponents’ defenses were able to get to Tannehill early and often. Shanahan could assist the Dolphins in protecting the quarterback and using his zone blocking scheme to run the football.

The area where they were also poor was defense. Overall they were the 25th rated defense in the NFL. Teams were able to run the football at will. They gave up 126.2 yards on the ground per game. Shanahan is not a defense minded coach.

Shanahan must be itching to coach again. If Miami wants to improve next season on offense Shanahan is the coach.   He would make them a better football team. The Dolphins should let him have at least two to three years to improve this team.

What do you think of the possibility of Shanahan going to the Miami Dolphins?
