Matt Nagy’s Time Running Out In Chicago

By Jordan Long

The Chicago Bears fell to 1-2 on the season after a 26-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns.  It was the first start for rookie quarterback Justin Fields.  The Bears’ offense struggled managing 47 total yards.  Head Coach Matt Nagy is on the hot seat and after this showing, it won’t be long until he’s gone.

Nagy has been the Bears’ Head Coach since the 2018 season.  The Bears went 12-4 in his first season earning a playoff spot. They lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 16-15 in the Wild-Card Round after their kicker at the time, Cody Parkey missed a field goal as time expired.  2019 Chicago went 8-8 and didn’t make the playoffs.  Last year they also went 8-8. They earned a playoff spot but lost to the New Orleans Saints in the Wild Card Round 21-9.

The Bears are a different team this year than last.  They let starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky leave during the offseason.  He agreed to a contract with the Buffalo Bills to be the back up to Josh Allen.  The Bears signed Andy Dalton in the offseason to be their starter even though they had a veteran quarterback on the roster in Nick Foles. They then drafted their quarterback of the future Justin Fields 11th overall.

Dalton started the first two games but is out due to a bone bruise.  Chicago went 1-1 with Dalton.  He passed for 262 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception.  Chicago could have gone with Foles against the Browns but decided it was best to start rookie Justin Fields.

Fields looked like a rookie quarterback.  The defense of the Browns blitzed him all game long.  He couldn’t do much as he was 6 of 20 passing for 68 yards.  The Browns kept him in the pocket for the most part and didn’t allow Fields to beat them with his legs.  He had 12 yards rushing.  The Browns ended up with 9 sacks on Fields.

Nagy knows the offensive showing was awful.  He wants to fix it.  According to chicago.suntimes.com Nagy said, “ We know what we wanted to do and what we were gonna try to do; [the Browns] did, too. You’ve gotta be able to adjust if they’re gonna try to take something away that they think he does well. . . . It’s my job to make sure that [problem] gets fixed. I’m gonna make sure that this gets fixed.’’

Nagy might not have that much time left as the Bears’ Head  Coach.  For his sake, they are luckily 1-2 and behind the Green Bay Packers by 1 game in the NFC North Division.  Nagy will be the Head Coach as long as they are in a playoff race.  Once they are out of it, the Bears should think of making a move. The Bears have never fired a coach in the middle of the season so it is highly unlikely they will do so with Nagy.   They can’t have another offensive showing like they did this past week.  If they do, the cries will only get louder for him to go.  Then again, it’s still early in the season.  Anything is possible.  There is still time for Nagy and the Bears’ coaching staff to turn this season around.
