Marshawn Lynch Mulling Retirement

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is thinking about the possibility of retiring from the NFL. Lynch played in only seven games this year, running for 417 yards, because of a hamstring injury and abdominal surgery. Should he really call it a career?

Lynch has played 9 years in the NFL with two different teams, the Buffalo Bills and the Seattle Seahawks. Lynch rushed for 9,112 yards and 74 touchdowns. In the open field he has 252 receptions for 1,979 yards and 9 touchdowns.   Lynch is a big part of the Seattle running game. His size at 5 foot 11 inches and 215 pounds makes it difficult for him to be brought down in the open field. One player can’t tackle him by himself and it takes a few defenders to bring him down.   If he decides to retire the Seahawks will miss his production.

The Seahawks will give him time to decide what he wants to do. According to ESPN, General Manager John Schneider said, “I know that we’re going to treat him with as much respect as we possibly can here, and give him a little leeway to kind of find his way in terms of what he wants to do. But I’m under the impression that he’s leaning toward retirement.”

Lynch’s career has been exceptional to this point. He won one Super Bowl Ring and has been an NFC champion twice. Lynch was voted to the Pro Bowl 5 times. He has also been placed onto the First Team All Pro and Second Team All Pro team in his career. Lynch also led the league in rushing touchdowns in two seasons. There isn’t much left for him to prove in the NFL. Plenty of players would want his type of career.

One reason to be hopeful that he will be back is he is under contract for next season. Lynch will cost $11.5 million against Seattle’s cap if he decides to come back. That is a lot of money for one player. It’s possible that if he suits up next season that the Seahawks ask him for a pay cut. That way they will have cap space to sign free agents.   The Seahawks will still be a team on paper who could make the playoffs even without Lynch. He should take his time to decide what is best for his future.

What should Marshawn Lynch do?
