Kliff Kingsbury In, Eric Bieniemy Out As Washington’s Offensive Coordinator

By Jordan Long

The Washington Commanders have their coaching staff set under Dan Quinn.  They hired Kliff Kingsbury to run the offense. This means Eric Bieniemy, who was the offensive coordinator last year, is out of a job.

Kingsbury doesn’t have much NFL experience. He served as the Head Coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2019 to 2022 after being the Texas Tech Head Coach from 2013 to 2018.  His record in college wasn’t outstanding at 35-40, a winning percentage of .467.  Arizona went a disappointing 28-37-1 under Kingsbury, a winning percentage of .432.  Arizona earned a playoff spot just once, 2021, when they finished 11-6.  Arizona was beaten in the Wild Card Round by the L.A. Rams 34-11. Arizona fired him following a 4-13 record in 2022.

This past season Kingsbury went back to college to be the senior offensive analyst at USC.  He was lucky enough to coach quarterback Caleb Williams who may be the top pick in this year’s NFL Draft.  Williams threw for 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns, and an impressively low 5 interceptions.  USC went 8-5.

Washington expects Kingsbury to improve the offense.  Last season they ranked 24th in total offense averaging 312.8 yards per game.  When it came to passing, they threw for 219.1 yards per game 18th in the NFL.  Washington even had trouble running the football, rushing for 93.6 yards per game, 27th in the NFL.  The offensive struggles are why new Head Coach Quinn replaced Bieniemy for Kingsbury.

Bieniemy will be on a coaching staff next year.  One place to look at is Kansas City. Bieniemy was in Kansas City from 2013 until 2022.  He was the offensive coordinator for 6 of those seasons.  If Andy Reid decides to retire following this year, it wouldn’t come as a shock for them to hire Bieniemy as Head Coach. He deserves to be in the conversation if that happens.  Then again, he could be somewhere else as an offensive coordinator.  Bieniemy will be looking for a new job no matter what.
