Klay Thompson’s Time In Golden State Could Be Up As Sides Are Far Apart In Contract Talks

By Jordan Long

The Golden State Warriors are set to start the season on October 24th when they host the Phoenix Suns.  The Warriors look to make a deeper run this year than last season when they advanced to the 2nd– round.  The Warriors are trying to keep Klay Thompson around for years to come but are far apart in contract talks with him.

Thompson has been with Golden State since they drafted him in the 1st– round of the 2011 NBA Draft.  With him on the team, he takes the pressure off of Steph Curry to be the only shooter on the court.  Curry looks for him because Thompson can nail the 3-point shot.  In his career to this point, Thompson has played 716 regular season games, averaging 19.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and  2.3 assists per game.  His 3-point percentage is 41.6%

During his time with Golden State the Warriors earned a playoff spot 9 times. Golden State advanced to the NBA Finals 6 times while winning it 4 times.  In the playoffs to this point, Thompson averaged 19.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.  His 3-point percentage stands at 40.5%.

Thompson’s current contract runs out at the end of this season.  He is scheduled to become a free agent this summer.  Thompson, of course, wants to stay with Golden State.  It is easy to see why.  They are always in the thick of the Western Conference Playoff race as a top seed and a threat to win a title.  That is all a player wants is a chance to win a ring.

Thompson is in the last year of his contract.  This means if there isn’t a deal by the end of the year,  Thompson will reach free agency which begins on June 30, 2024.  He might be one of the biggest names in free agency because of what he can do on the basketball court.  Thompson can elevate a team to be a threat to win the NBA championship.

The truth is, there is plenty of time to reach a new deal with him.  The Warriors are going to keep talking to Thompson to try to find common ground. It may take into the summer before free agency to keep him.  If that doesn’t happen, the Golden State Warriors risk losing him for nothing.  Thompson will be playing basketball next year.  It’s just a matter of whether it will be with Golden State or a new franchise.
