Kam Chancellor Holding Out

The Seattle Seahawks’ Pro Bowl safety Kam Chancellor has been holding out. He wants Seattle to adjust his contract. Chancellor has three years and $16.88 million left on his current deal but Seattle isn’t obligated to honor it. He has no guarantee for any money after this season.

According to ESPN, his agent, Alvin Keels, said, “Nothing has changed. He will not report without his contract being addressed this season. The team and I have been in contact, but we haven’t been able to agree on any compromise.”

Seattle can fine Chancellor $30,000 per day. He did warn the Seahawks before training camp that if a new deal wasn’t in place he would not report. Camp is approaching its third week. What is the point of holding out? He saw that quarterback Russell Wilson received a new contract a few weeks ago and last year Marshawn Lynch signed to stay in Seattle after holding out. He is hoping that Seattle will pay him what he believes he deserves.

It’s a different situation than Wilson and Lynch because they were at the end of their current deals. Seattle could have let them test free agency, but wanted to keep both of them. Seattle decided to sign them to contract extensions to remain in a Seattle uniform. Chancellor wants more money or at the very least have a guarantee that he will get paid on his deal.

This is all about Chancellor. By holding out, he is not helping the team but showing he thinks he is better than the team.   That’s an image a player really doesn’t want to have. Chancellor should be out there with his teammates trying to get back to a Super Bowl and possibly win it this year. Holding out isn’t doing anybody any favors. By not being out there, who knows what kind of football shape he is in. All this demonstrates is that he wants more money. He should be out there proving to Seattle he deserves an adjustment on his contract. He can’t do that by sitting at home.

Seattle should fine him for not showing up. Make him learn a lesson and hurt him in the pocket book. There is nothing else they can do. They have a contract for him and he should honor it.

What do you think about of Kam Chancellor’s holding out?
