Jimmy Rollins Heads To The Bay Area, Signs With The San Francisco Giants

By Jordan Long

The San Francisco Giants added veteran shortstop Jimmy Rollins to their roster. It is a minor league deal and could pay Rollins $1 million if he makes the Giants’ opening day roster. This will be his third team in three years.

Rollins spent last year with the Chicago White Sox, making the big league club out of Spring Training. That lasted 41 games before Chicago decided to designate him for assignment in June. In those games Rollins hit .221 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI’s. Those numbers weren’t noteworthy but he still wanted to play. There wasn’t another team that wanted to take a risk on him until the Giants signed him on Monday.

This is not a smart move by the San Francisco Giants. Rollins best days are behind him at 38 years old. Even if he makes the Giants team, Rollins will be a bench player. San Francisco already has their everyday shortstop in Brandon Crawford who is a two-time Gold Glove winner. Rollins will be competing for the backup infield position against Kelby Tomlinson, Ehire Adrianza, and Conor Gillaspie.

The Giants are giving Rollins a shot to continue his Major League Baseball career.   This is a low risk move. Rollins has to prove to the San Francisco Giants that he can still play baseball at a high level. If Rollins fails to make the team, the Giants won’t have to pay him and it might be time for him to retire from the game of baseball.

What do you think of the San Francisco Giants agreeing to a minor league deal with Jimmy Rollins?
