Jimbo Fisher Out As Texas A&M’s Head Football Coach

By Jordan Long

The Texas A&M Aggies sit at 6-4.   They just beat Mississippi State on Saturday, 51-10.  Even with the win, it didn’t save Head Coach Jimbo Fisher’s job.  He is out after 6 years.

Texas A&M hired Jimbo Fisher on December 1st, 2017.  The job had been open since the Aggies fired Kevin Sumlin.  Sumlin was the Aggies Head Coach from 2012 to 2017.  Texas A&M went 51-26 with him as Head Coach.  They played in 5 Bowl Games under him and were 3-2 in those games.  It didn’t make sense to fire Sumlin since he was successful.  Sumlin failed to win an SEC Conference title which cost him his job.

Fisher had Head Coaching experience with Florida State.  There he was 83-23. Florida State ended up in 7 bowl games including the BCS National Championship game in 2013.  Florida State knocked off Auburn 34-31. That was his one and only National Championship.

Texas A&M had high expectations with Fisher.  They are in the competitive SEC Conference.  It was expected he would coach them to an SEC title game and win it.  They wanted to also be in the conversation for the College Football Playoff.

It never happened.  Fisher went 45-2 playing in 3 bowl games.  They didn’t meet expectations with him though.  They failed to go to an SEC Title game.  The school felt it was time for him to go.

According to ESPN.com, Texas A&M Athletic Director Ross Bjork said, “After very careful analysis of all the components related to Texas A&M football, I recommended to President [Mark] Welsh and then Chancellor [John] Sharp that a change in the leadership of the program was necessary in order for Aggie football to reach our full potential and they accepted my decision. We appreciate Coach Fisher’s time here at Texas A&M and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

With this, Texas A&M owes Fisher $76.8 million.  ESPN stated Texas A&M must pay Fisher $19.2 million within 60 days and then pay him $7.2 million annually through 2031. That is a lot of money to owe him.

The school made the wrong choice by hiring Fisher and they are trying to make it right.  Elijah Robinson is now the Interim Head Coach. He served as the Assistant Head Coach.  He will lead them for the next two games plus a bowl game if they are invited.  Texas A&M will start a coaching search after that.  Hopefully, the next coach can meet expectations and help this team be more competitive in the SEC Conference.
