The Dallas Cowboys extended the contract of tight end Jason Witten for, 4 more years. The agreement has a maximum value of $29.6 million, keeping Witten in a Dallas uniform until the 2021 season.
This was a smart move by the Dallas Cowboys. Witten was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 3rd round of the 2003 NFL draft. In his 14 year career Witten has a total of 1,089 receptions for 11,888 yards and 63 touchdowns. His average yards per catch is an impressive 10.9 yards. Witten is dangerous in the open field. When he catches the football, he can go for long yardage and touchdowns. Those yards move the chains and keep drives alive for the Dallas Cowboys’ offense.
Witten has also made a name for himself blocking for the running backs. He can block his defender to create a hole for the running back to run through. Witten can also block on passing plays and not allow a defender to sack the quarterback.
This was a respectable deal for the Cowboys. Witten has proven he is one of the best tight ends in the NFL. They didn’t want to risk losing him in free agency and needed to get this contract done now, insuring that Witten will be in a Cowboy uniform the rest of his career.
The Cowboys know how valuable Witten is to the football team. The Cowboys are building a winning football team around him. They have a young quarterback and running back in Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot. The Cowboys are in position to be a playoff team for years to come.
The only accomplishment left for Witten in his Hall of Fame career is a Super Bowl ring. The Cowboys have a talented team to accomplish that goal. Hopefully, they achieve that before Witten retires.
