Jarvis Landry’s Future Is In The Hands Of The Cleveland Browns

NFL free agency starts on March 16th.  This is when free agent players will look for massive deals.  Franchises, on the other hand, will seek to improve the team to become not only a playoff team but a Super Bowl threat.  The Browns are one of those teams looking to better their 8-9 record.  One player who isn’t a free agent this year but wants a long term contract is wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

Landry finished his 4th season in Cleveland.  His numbers were down but Landry was still productive in the offense.  He finished with 52 receptions for 570 yards and 2 touchdowns,  the lowest  in his career.

The reason his numbers were down was because he was injured during week 2’s victory over the Houston Texans.  According to brownswire.usatoday.com, Landry said on his Twitter the injuries were far worse saying, “Reality behind all this is I came back to play in the best shape of my life, I got hurt in week 2 with a high grade MCL Sprain, Partial quad tear, and bone bruise. Then came back way too early and ended up staying hurt the entire season. You never heard me mention anything about it “

Landry showed he is a tough player putting up numbers in the offense.  Quarterback Baker Mayfield looked for him because Landry can catch the football and gain yards.  One miss by a defender and Landry could be gone for a touchdown.

Landry would like to stay in Cleveland.  He has one more year left on his deal.  The only problem is it is not guaranteed.  If he can land a spot on the Browns roster, Landry’s contract is around  $16.379 million.  The Browns may cut him which is  more likely.  The Brown’s cap hit wouldn’t be that bad at only $1.5 million in dead cap space forcing  Landry to be a free agent.  He then could sign with any team.

Landry knows that is a possibility. MSN.com stated Landry said on his Twitter,  “I have put the ball in CLE court by telling them I would like to stay but if not then I’m confident enough in myself to be a better healthy me this year and moving forward to helping do my part in winning a championship elsewhere.’’

The Browns will do what is best for the franchise moving forward.  They know they have some tough decisions coming.  Landry may be part of that plan.  Letting him go wouldn’t be the worst idea as that gives him a fresh start.  He may find a team that is a better fit for him.  He could contribute to a winning team and who knows, maybe that franchise will end up making a deep run in the postseason.  A player’s dream is to be a Super Bowl Champion.

The Browns will take their time.  They will need to decide by free agency or even before March 16th if they want to keep Landry around.  There might be a wide receiver in free agency who could put up better numbers than Landry in this offense.
