Jacksonville Not Ready To Bench Quarterback Gardner Minshew Yet

By Jordan Long

The Jacksonville Jaguars started the season 1-0 after a 27-20 victory over the Colts.  Since then they have lost 5 straight games.  They look to end that streak this Sunday when they face the L.A. Chargers.   It is possible Jacksonville could bench starting quarterback Gardner Minshew.

Minshew stats aren’t horrible with 1,682 yards passing and 11 touchdowns.  The downside is the turnovers.  He isn’t reading the defenses well. Minshew is forcing the ball into coverage and those are interceptions, totaling 5.  He is also having trouble holding onto the ball with 3 fumbles.  That is 8 turnovers.

It isn’t all Minshew’s fault.  The defense isn’t doing their job.  The defense gives up 30.2 points per game, meaning Jacksonville is trailing for most of the game.  That forces Minshew to use his arm to try and come back into games.  It hasn’t worked yet.

Even though Jacksonville is struggling, they could make a change at quarterback.  According to CBSsports.com, Head Coach Doug Marrone said, “Maybe in the future, I think.  I mean, I’d be naïve not to say (it’s a possibility]. That’s up for any position, any play that we can do for ourselves to get better. I didn’t feel that way during the course of the game.”

The backup quarterback is veteran Mike Glennon.  Glennon hasn’t started a game in the NFL since 2017 when he was with the Chicago Bears.  That year he went 1-3.  Glennon has mostly been a backup and watched the game from the sidelines.  Last year Glennon appeared in 2 games for the Raiders tossing for 56 yards and 1 touchdown.  In his career, Glennon is 6-16 as a starter.  He has tossed for 5,163 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions.

Glennon may not be as effective as Minshew if he is put into the game.  He can still gain yards and move the chains, but they may not put up more points.  The only way Jacksonville improves is if the defense starts to stop offenses.  Otherwise, they will keep playing from behind which is not a recipe for success.
