Houston Texans Tab Brian Hoyer Over Ryan Mallett As Starting QB

The Houston Texans announced on Monday that Brian Hoyer will start at quarterback this season. Hoyer beat out Ryan Mallett, earning the job in training camp. According to the Houston Chronicle, Mallett said, “Obviously I’m disappointed and I don’t agree with it but I’ll be ready.” Is this really the right decision for the Texans?

Hoyer appeared in 32 games in his NFL career. Last year was his first year to have any kind of extended playing time. He started 14 games for the Browns. In those games the Browns went 7-4. The Browns looked like they were making a playoff run. Hoyer threw for 3,326 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Seven of those interceptions were thrown in three games. Hoyer lost the job to Johnny Manziel. The yards he threw for are a decent number. He needs to improve the touchdowns to interceptions ratio.

Ryan Mallett was trying to beat out Hoyer for the job. Mallett doesn’t have as much experience in the NFL. Mallett has played seven total games, throwing for 417 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. Mallett started two games last year with the Texans going 1-1. He suffered a pectoral injury and missed the rest of the season.

According to ESPN, Hoyer said, “I think at this point there’s definitely things that need to be corrected and get fixed. But I don’t feel poorly about where I’m at. I don’t know if I’d say I feel great. I think we have a long way to go as an entire offensive unit, myself included.”

NFL.com stated that Head Coach Bill O’Brian understands that Mallett didn’t like the decision saying, “He disagrees (with the decision), but he’s going to go to work and prepare like he’s going to play, and that’s what he’s done.”

In the end this comes as no surprise. Hoyer has the experience, giving the Texans the best chance to win games. Mallett will now be the backup to Hoyer. He isn’t a bad backup quarterback. If Hoyer struggles, Mallett will be there ready for his name to be called. When he is in the game, he needs to show the Texans they made the wrong decision. The Texans right now are in better shape with Hoyer.

What do you think of the Texans naming Brian Hoyer as their starting quarterback?
