Free Agent Sammy Watkins Seeks Best Fit For His NFL Future

By Jordan Long

Free agent wide receiver Sammy Watkins is looking for a new NFL home.  He has been with the Kansas City Chiefs for the past 3 seasons.  Watkins is scheduled to visit the Baltimore Ravens and the Indianapolis Colts.

Watkins played in 10 games for the Chiefs last year.  He dealt with a hamstring injury.  Watkins was still productive with 421 receiving yards and  2 touchdowns.  Watkins appeared in all 3 of Kansas City’s playoff games including the Super Bowl but he was not effective with only 1 catch for 13 yards and 1 touchdown.  Kansas City decided to let Watkins walk after their Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay.

In his 3 years with Kansas City, he totaled 129 receptions for 1,613 yards and 8 touchdowns.  In the playoffs, he suited up in 6 games for the Chiefs hauling in 25 footballs for 477 yards and 1 touchdown, helping Kansas City win Super Bowl 54.

Watkins is a free agent for the first time since 2018. The Ravens and the Colts have shown the most interest in the wide receiver.  The Ravens could use the veteran wide receiver.  Their top pass catcher last year was Marquise Brown who caught 58 passes for 769 yards and 1 touchdown.  He is entering his 3rd year in the NFL.

Baltimore doesn’t have a veteran wide receiver.  Watkins fits that need and gives quarterback Lamar Jackson another player to throw the ball to if Watkins decides to go there.  Watkins most likely would be the #1 wide receiver on the depth chart with Brown on the opposite side.  It could help the Ravens earn a playoff spot.

The addition of Watkins may not help the Ravens be on top of the AFC North Division.  The Steelers are still going to be in the mix because of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The Browns are a young team who look like they could control the division for the next few years.

The Colts are in the same boat as the Ravens.  They need a veteran wide receiver.  They are most likely going to lose T.Y. Hilton in free agency.  The Colts are going to replace him somehow and Watkins might be the answer.  The Colts should consider Watkins because he is a veteran and will be the #1 wide receiver on the depth chart.  He would catch passes from quarterback Carson Wentz to move the chains.

Watkins is going to do what is best for his NFL future.  Both the Ravens and the Colts are fits for him.  There may be another franchise that will sign him as well because of his ability to catch the football.  Watkins will take his time deciding which team to play for next.
