Forever Orange, Jim Boeheim Coaching Career Comes To An End

By Jordan Long

The University of Syracuse season ended in the Atlantic Coast Conference as they were beaten by Wake Forest 77-74.  Their record stood at 17-14.  They will miss the NCAA tournament for the 3rd time in 4 years.  Syracuse announced that they will be moving on from legendary coach Jim Boeheim.

Boeheim  had been the Head Coach of Syracuse since the 1976-1977 season.  His resume is impressive.  Syracuse went to the NCAA Tournament 35 times.  They advanced to the Final Four 5 times but only came up NCAA Champions once, 2003.  That year they beat the University of Kansas 81-78.

This season, there weren’t high expectations for this team.  The goal was to make the NCAA Tournament.  Unfortunately, they came up short.  Once Syracuse lost to Wake Forest, Boeheim future was in the air.  According to NBCsports.com, Boeheim said, “It’s up to the university. They have to make their decision, and it’s up to them.”

It didn’t take long for the school to decide his future. He is now out of a job, ending his coaching career.

Boeheim is one of the best coaches to ever coach the NCAA game.  His record stands at an impressive 1,116-440, a winning percentage of .717.  Those wins are second only to Mike Krzyzewski who has 1,202 wins. Boeheim  was able to turn the Syracuse program around.  Not many coaches have the opportunity to coach for as long as he did, a total of 47 years.  Some are gone in a few years or they move on to build a different program.

Syracuse named the coach who will take over, Adrian Autry. Autry has been on Boeheim’s staff since 2011.  Syracuse is hoping he can have the same success that Boeheim did.  Either way though, Autry has big shoes to fill.
