Fixing Thursday Night Football For The NFL

By Jordan Long

The NFL is considering the possibility of getting rid of Thursday Night Football altogether or eliminating the number of games scheduled. The NFL must fix Thursday Night Football.

The major problem with Thursday Night Football is the product. The NFL thought they were going to have great divisional matchups, which would be close games. Teams who are selected to play usually have already competed that Sunday. That doesn’t allow teams to implement a complete game plan, practice, or fully prepare for the scheduled game on Thursday. These end up being a blowout by one team or low scoring games. It hasn’t been respectable.

The NFL may need to rethink Thursday Night Football altogether. There are two Thursday night games they must keep. The first game of the year is on Thursday Night Football. It is all about how the NFL is back. The Super Bowl Champion from the previous year starts the season. Thursday Thanksgiving games should be kept because those are traditional.

If they want to reduce the number of Thursday Night games, it’s an easy fix.   They don’t need to play them every week. The NFL could schedule teams who are coming off of a bye week. This would allow these teams to have a full week of practice and time to prepare for the game. Fans might see a better product, closer games, and ratings may go up.

The NFL’s contract with CBS and NBC for Thursday Night Football ends after 2017. This means the NFL will still have Thursday Night Football every week next season. After 2017 it might be time to bring Thursday Night Football to an end unless the NFL modifies the schedule.

How would you change Thursday Night Football for the NFL?

  1. Thanks Clint for the comment. Yes it would be nice if the NFL did make teams on the bye play Thursday Night. We may end up having better games.
