Filip Chytil Stays In The Big Apple, Agrees To A 4-Year Extension

By Jordan Long

The New York Rangers stand at 44-20-10 for a total of 98 points. They are 3rd in the Metropolitan Division. Heading into the final 8 games of the year they have decided to extend center Filip Chytil to a 4-year extension. It is worth $17.75 million or paying him around $4.43 million a year.

Chytil is in his 6th year with the Rangers.  Before this season, his top year for the Rangers was in 2020 when he had 14 goals and 9 assists for a total of 23 points. This year Chytil is having his best year in the league.  Chytil has scored a career-high 22 goals and 20 assists for a total of 42 points.  He also sees time on the power play, scoring 3 goals and adding 2 assists.

The postseason is when players want to step up their game.  Chytil appeared in 23 playoff games throughout his career. He hasn’t been the Rangers’ best scorer with 7 goals and 2 assists for 9 points, all coming last year.  The Rangers anticipate his play to be even better this year as they look to win the Stanley Cup.

The Rangers wanted to make this deal to keep Chytil in place for years to come.  They have the expectations he will grow at the NHL level even more.  Chytil is 23 years old.  This deal will keep him in New York until he is 27.  By that time Chytil will be in the prime of his career.

New York wants to make deep runs into the Stanley Cup playoffs year in and year out.  Chytil is just part of that solution.  The best case is he becomes a superstar in this league which will earn him another long-term contract.  The worst case is his game won’t progress which will lead to him being traded or the Rangers will let him test free agency.  The Rangers may be taking a risk.
