Drew Brees Planning To Play Next Season, Chasing A Second Ring Just Like Brett Favre

By Jordan Long

The New Orleans Saints lost in heartbreaking fashion to the L.A. Rams in the NFC Championship game.  The Rams kicked a 57-yard field goal in overtime to take the game 26-23.  After the loss, all eyes were on Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees.  He has no plans of retiring.  According to profootballtalk.nbcsports.com, Brees said, “I plan on being here next year and making another run at it.”

Brees has 2 years left on his current deal.  He can opt out of it after next season and it wouldn’t hurt the Saints on the cap.  Brees is going to be paid $22.45 million next year.

It’s not the money that matters to Brees.  He wants to win a 2nd ring.  Another Super Bowl victory would equal Peyton Manning and John Elway who each have 2 when they played quarterback in the NFL.

The problem with doing so is he may never win another one just like Brett Favre. Favre kept chasing a ring after winning Super Bowl 31.  He lost Super Bowl 32 to the Denver Broncos.  Favre ended up in 2 NFC Championship Games the rest of his Hall of Fame career, but lost both of them.  In 2007 he was with the Green Bay Packers and they lost to the New York Giants 23-20 in overtime. 2009 it was the same story but this time with the Vikings. The Saints knocked them off in overtime 31-28.

Brees needs to see the writing on the wall.  There is no guarantee the Saints will be in the same position next season to have the chance to move on to the Super Bowl.  Once the year starts, Brees will be 40, getting up there in age for a quarterback.

Even if Brees doesn’t win another championship, he is still going to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  He is 4th in NFL in terms of wins including the postseason at 163.  Brees has the record for the most passing yards in a career with 74,437.   He is 2nd in passing touchdowns with 520 and will break the record next year.  Brees has also been voted to 12 Pro Bowls.  It is time for him to walk away because there is nothing left for him to prove in the NFL.
