Denver Broncos Trade Aqib Talib To The Rams, Save Themselves Salary Cap Room

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos decided to trade cornerback Aqib Talib to the L.A. Rams for a 5th-round pick. This saves the Denver Broncos $11 million in cap space this upcoming season and next year. According to yahoo.com, Talib said, “Man, I’m so excited. I can’t wait to play for Coach Sean McVay, go back with working with Wade, and playing with my young man, Marcus Peters. He’s going to bring that young energy back to me.”

Talib had been with the Denver Broncos the past 4 years. Chris Harris and Talib became one of the best cornerback tandems in the league. Opposing quarterbacks couldn’t throw the ball to either side of the field in fear that it would be picked off. Talib had 11 interceptions in a Broncos’ uniform with 6 touchdowns.

Last season was a down year for him. He was a step slower and opponents were taking advantage. Talib wasn’t covering as well and it showed. Receivers were able to make large gains and touchdowns over him. He had one interception, his lowest total in the Mile High City. The Broncos needed to let him go. By trading him at least they received something back. Denver also believes that cornerback Bradley Roby is ready to take his place as the starter opposite of Chris Harris.

For Talib this gives him a fresh start with a new team. He is reunited with Wade Phillips. Phillips was the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator for two years, 2015 and 2016. In those seasons Talib thrived with 6 interceptions.

The Rams have the top 2 cornerbacks in the league with Talib and Marcus Peters. Peters was traded in February from the Chiefs. The Rams, with the addition of Talib, have put themselves in a position to make a run to the Super Bowl and should improve on their 11-5 record. Time will tell.
