Denver Broncos’ Second Preseason Game Position Battles

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos are set to take on the San Francisco 49ers in their second preseason game tomorrow. Kick-off is slated for 6:30 PM Mountain Time from Denver. This will be the first look for the home fans to see the Broncos in action. What should look for in this game?

The Denver Broncos are still searching for their starting quarterback. Last week Mark Sanchez was named the starter. This time around it will be Trevor Siemian. Siemian is expected to play about a quarter and a half. This is a big test for him because he has never started an NFL game. If he can come out and play well, Siemian might be the starter for the all important third preseason game. Sanchez will also play about a quarter and a half. Sanchez has to struggle in order to give the job to Siemian. Lynch should see some action in the fourth quarter, giving the coaches an idea how far Lynch has come since the first preseason game.

The Broncos also need to replace defensive end Vance Walker. He tore his ACL in practice earlier this week. Billy Winn, Adam Gotsis, and Lars Koht are vying for that spot. All of them must have a decent game in stopping the run and getting in the passing lanes. If they can, the coaching staff might have a difficult time deciding between them. Whoever performs well might get the nod to start in the season’s opener.

A battle that could be important is the punter position. The Denver Broncos are paying Britton Colquitt $3.25 million this year. That is a lot of money to pay a guy whose job is to punt the football. They drafted Riley Dixon to give Colquitt some competition.

Against the Bears, Colquitt punted three times with all of them landing inside the 20. His average per punt was 44.3 yards. Riley Dixon punted 2 times and both of them were downed inside the 20. His average per punt was 43.5 yards. If this continues to be close, Denver is going to have to make a difficult decision on who to keep. If Colquitt keeps out punting Dixon, then the Broncos may have to ask Colquitt for a pay cut to free up salary space. I still think Colquitt makes the team. He is so valuable with his leg and can make opponents’ offense start deep in their own territory.

These are just a few of the positions to scrutinize tomorrow night.

What position are you most looking forward to watching during the Denver Broncos vs San Francisco 49ers game tomorrow night?
