Denver Broncos’ Penalties Show How Undisciplined The Team Really Is

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday by a score of 27-14.  The Broncos played sloppy most of the game.  They were penalized a season high 13 times for 120 yards.  Baltimore, on the other hand, was more disciplined with 7 flags for 52 yards.  For all the yellow laundry against the Denver Broncos, the blame has to go on Head Coach Vance Joseph.

The Broncos had some horrible penalties that shouldn’t happen.  On Baltimore’s second possession of the game, Denver kicked off to Tim White.  He was hit out of bounds at the Ravens’ 37-yard line.  For some reason backup cornerback Isaac Yiadom, who was standing on the sideline, decided it was okay to push White after the play.  That was a 15-yard penalty, setting Baltimore up with decent field position.  With 3:40 left in the game and Denver at the Baltimore 6-yard line, Denver was called for having too many men in the huddle.   These two penalties show how undisciplined the Broncos are under Vance Joseph.

The Broncos offensive line couldn’t stop from holding the Baltimore Ravens’ pass rush.  When Denver seemed to have a little momentum going, the drive stalled because of holding penalties.  That kept moving Denver back and they were unable to move the football.  That is how you lose a game.

Denver is one of the most penalized teams through 3 games this year.  They have a total of 26.  The Bills have the most at 28.  The 26 infractions have cost Denver 215 yards.  Of the 26 calls, 8 have been offensive holding which leads the league, not a stat Denver wants to see. Offensive lineman Garret Bolles leads the team with 3 holding calls.

All these violations could be avoided.  They can’t have 120 yards on penalties or be flagged 13 times.  It is not a recipe for success.  If they keep this up, Denver may end up giving up field position which in turn could cost them games and Vance Joseph may be fired during the year.

Denver is lucky to be 2-1.  They host Kansas City on Monday Night Football next week.  Penalties on offense and defense can’t be an issue.  If they are, Kansas City will take advantage.  The trend of being flagged needs to stop.
