David Dahl’s Major League Baseball Journey

by Jordan Long

The Colorado Rockies called up top prospect David Dahl. He will be on the Rockies roster starting tonight against the Baltimore Orioles. They sent down outfielder Brandon Barnes to a make room for Dahl.

David Dahl was the Rockies’ first pick in the 2012 MLB draft. I was lucky enough to see him play here in Grand Junction with the Grand Junction Rockies in 2012. I could tell that Dahl had the makings of a decent Major League Baseball player.   Dahl could do everything a team looks for in an outfielder.  He rarely dropped the ball in the outfield. Dahl could throw the ball from the outfield to home plate to tag runners out who were trying to score. His offensive numbers were terrific. Dahl batted .379 with 57 RBI’s and 9 home runs.   Whenever Dahl was on base, he was a threat to steal bases because of his speed and even stole 12.

2013 Dahl appeared in only ten games in Single A with the Asheville Tourists located in North Carolina. Dahl hit .275 and collected 7 RBI’s while stealing 2 bases. 2014 he was still in single A, splitting time between Ashville and Modesto, California.

Last season Dahl was in Double A with the New Britain Rock Cats. He was having a respectable season with a batting average of .278, 24 RBI’s, 6 home runs, and 22 stolen bases. On May 28, Dahl was involved in a nasty collision while he was playing the outfield and ran into a teammate going for a fly ball. He suffered a lacerated spleen and was shut down the rest of the season.

This year Dahl was in Double A Hartford, lasting 76 games. He was then called up to Albuquerque for Triple A ball, appearing in only 16 games with the Albuquerque Isotopes. Dahl hit a terrific .484 with 16 RBI’s, and 5 home runs.

Dahl seems ready for the challenge of Major League Baseball. He has been successful on every stop to this point. The Rockies are lucky to have a gifted outfielder. He can do it all. If the Rockies happen to trade outfielder Carlos Gonzalez or Charlie Blackmon, they are in capable hands with David Dahl. Hopefully, the Rockies will see his development continue at the Major League level.
