Darrelle Revis Rides Into The Sunset, Retires From The NFL

By Jordan Long

Darrelle Revis decided to retire from the NFL. The cornerback spent 11 seasons in the NFL playing for 4 teams, the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots, and the Kansas City Chiefs. According to ESPN, Revis said, “Today I am closing a chapter in my life that I once dreamed of as a kid and I am officially retiring from the National Football League.”

Revis was one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL when he played. He began his career with the New York Jets in 2007. He picked the ball off 3 times. His top season in the NFL was 2009 with a total of 6 interceptions. Quarterbacks were starting to learn if they threw it to Revis’ side of the field, he would tip or intercept it for turnovers, giving his offense decent field position. They were avoiding throwing to his side of the field.

Revis had his worst year in 2010. He suffered a hamstring injury in week 2, limiting him to 13 games. He didn’t record an interception, the only time as a Jet. Revis spent 2 more years with New York.

In the 2013 offseason, Revis was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This was in hopes of improving the Buccaneers’ secondary. It didn’t. He recorded 2 interceptions in his one and only year in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers released him on March 12, 2014 after failing to trade him, meaning Revis was a free agent.

He wasn’t a free agent long. He agreed to a 1-year contract with the New England Patriots.   He helped the defense with 2 interceptions. New England beat the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX for his one and only ring.   The Patriots decided to let him go after that year. Revis went back to the Jets for 2 more years.

This past season he was with the Kansas City Chiefs. It was clear he couldn’t play football at a high level anymore, appearing in 5 games and didn’t pick the ball off. He couldn’t defend and allowed too many receivers to run past him for long gains. It was time for Revis to walk away from the game.

He ended his career with 29 interceptions while running back 3 of them for touchdowns. Revis was voted into 7 Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl. There wasn’t anything left for him to play for. Revis is making the right decision. He leaves the NFL on his own terms.
