Danny Duffy Stays With The Kansas City Royals, Becomes The Ace Of The Pitching Staff

By Jordan Long

The Kansas City Royals kept one of their best starting pitchers. Danny Duffy agreed to a 5-year $65 million contract. It will keep him in a Royals uniform through the 2021 season.

Duffy is one of the best pitchers for the Kansas City Royals. Last season he went 12-3 with an ERA of 3.51 and added 188 strikeouts. His 12 wins were the most by a Kansas City Royals starting pitcher. Once the season was over, Duffy could have filed for arbitration and been a free agent after the upcoming season. Kansas City didn’t want that to happen because he is valuable to the team. Duffy becomes the ace of the pitching staff after Edinson Volquez left earlier this offseason and signed with the Miami Marlins.

Duffy has been a pitcher in the Majors six years, all with the Royals. He has a career record of 36-33 with an era of 3.71. Duffy is able to strike batters out with a total of 540. Those numbers will help the Royals win games this season.

The downside of this deal is how many home runs the opposition hits off of him. Duffy gave up a total of 27 home runs last year. That number must decrease in order for the Royals to trust him as the number one starter. He can’t leave the ball in the middle of the zone, otherwise those are home runs.

The Royals are taking a gamble on Duffy. He hasn’t started more than 26 games in a single season, which occurred last year. Hopefully Duffy can prove to the Royals he can handle being the number one starter. Time will only tell if the risk pays off for the Royals
