Dallas Cowboys’ Head Coach Mike McCarthy On The Hot Seat? Owner Jerry Jones Says No

By Jordan Long

The Dallas Cowboys are in training camp as it opened Tuesday.  Dallas is looking to improve on their 12-5 record.  Head Coach Mike McCarthy could be one of the NFL coaches to start the season on the hot seat, but owner Jerry Jones doesn’t feel that way.

McCarthy has been the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys since 2020.  McCarthy’s first year was one to forget as the Cowboys went a disappointing 6-10.  Once the 2021 season started,  McCarthy had to deliver a winning year.  A losing record again or even missing the playoffs, his seat was only going to get hotter and who knows how much longer he would be the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Luckily Dallas played great football last year, going 12-5, earning a playoff spot for the first time since 2018.  Unfortunately, they lost a close game in the Wild Card round to the San Francisco 49ers, 23-17.

Going into this season, questions are swirling about if McCarthy is the right man for the job.  According to USAtoday.com, Owner Jerry Jones said, “I want to be real clear: He wouldn’t be sitting here today if I didn’t think he was the man to lead this team to a Super Bowl. He would not be. And I have choices (that) were there for my use had I wanted them.”

Basically, what Jones is saying is McCarthy is the Head Coach right now.  McCarthy has 2 more years left on his current contract.   In the past, Jones has been patient with Head Coaches.  The Coach before McCarthy was Jason Garret. He lasted 9 seasons.  The Cowboys earned a playoff spot 3 times under Garrett but weren’t able to advance to an NFC Championship Game. The furthest Dallas went was the Divisional Round in 2018, 2016, and 2014. For McCarthy, he knows this is a big year for Dallas.  The Cowboys have not made it to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since 2006 and 2007.  If he can coach them back to the postseason, then all of these questions about his job security will die down.

The Cowboys begin the regular season on September 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  They anticipate that will be the start of a great season where they earn a playoff berth. Of course, the goal is to win the Super Bowl.  Dallas hasn’t appeared in a Super Bowl since they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl 30 in 1996. McCarthy hopes he can end that drought.
