Colorado Mesa University Baseball Team Caps Regular Season With Another RMAC Title

This past weekend, the Colorado Mesa University baseball team headed to Golden, Colorado to face the Colorado School of Mines for a three game series. Upmost on their minds was to clinch a fifth straight RMAC (Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) regular season title. They needed one win in the three games.

The first game was on Friday. Mines put a 2 spot in the 3rd inning. Mesa battled back to tie the game in the 6th. Mines responded with three runs in the 8th and held on for a 5-2 victory. Mesa would have to wait another day to possibly wrap up the RMAC.

Game two was on Saturday. The bats would need to wake up for Mesa to have a chance to secure the conference title.   The Mavs had 18 hits but only scored six runs, leaving 11 men on base. That could have been the difference in this game as Mines only left 6 men on base. Mines took game two 11-6, leaving Mesa with one more chance to win the RMAC.   If they didn’t win the game, CSU-Pueblo would take the crown and be the #1 seed in the RMAC Tournament.

In game three on Sunday Mines took an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Mesa tied the game in the 4th. Mines regained the lead scoring two runs in the 5th.   Both teams would fail to score until the 9th inning. Mesa entered the inning down 3-1.   All they needed was to score some runs and shutout Mines in the bottom half. Mesa scored three runs to take a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th. Mines went three up and three down in the bottom half. Mesa won 4-3 and with the victory are the RMAC regular season champions, earning the #1 seed in the RMAC Baseball Tournament.

Mesa’s hard work in the regular season paid off. They won the RMAC yet again, but won’t have much time to celebrate. Thursday starts the RMAC Baseball Tournament at Sam Suplizio Field located in Grand Junction. It’s a double elimination format.   The winner will get the automatic bid to the South Central Regional. The Mavs hope to defend the title. They won the tournament the last two years. Mesa opens against Adams State on Thursday at 7 PM.
