Colorado Mesa Mavericks Baseball Team RMAC Tournament Champions Will Host South Central Regional

The Colorado Mesa Mavericks baseball team was the #1 seed in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament (RMAC) this past weekend. Their goal was to win the whole thing. If they did, they would receive the automatic bid to the South Central Regional and possibly host it. This was a double elimination tournament.

On Thursday, Mesa faced Adams State. The Mavs cruised to an 11-1 victory. They limited Adams State to only 6 hits while Mesa had 11 runs on 11 hits. Pitching was unbelievable. The Mavs pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts. This was a decent outing to start the tournament.

On Friday, Mesa was hoping to beat CSU-Pueblo. The winner would reach the title game on Saturday. The loser would play again that day in the loser’s bracket. This was a tight game throughout. Tied at two heading into the 9th inning, Mesa needed to make sure CSU-Pueblo didn’t score in the top half so they would have a chance at a walk off win.   It didn’t happen.   CSU Pueblo scored 5 runs in the top half of the inning and didn’t allow Mesa to score. The Mavs would had to play another game to even have a chance to play for the title.

Colorado School of Mines was next up for Mesa on Friday. A spot in the championship game was at stake. The loser would be done with the RMAC Tournament. The Mavs made sure it wasn’t them with a 14-7, victory. Mesa was into the championship. All that stood between Mesa and the RMAC Tournament championship was CSU-Pueblo who the Mavs needed to beat twice on Saturday.

In the first game, Mesa scored 8 runs in the 8th inning. That would be the difference as they drummed CSU-Pueblo 16-8 to set up a true championship game. Mesa fell behind 1-0 after the 1st inning. They responded with two runs in the 2nd inning, four runs in the 3rd, and a run in the 4th to take a 7-1 lead. CSU-Pueblo wouldn’t go away quietly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 4th and 5th to cut the Mavs lead to 7-5.   The Mavs added two runs in the 6th inning. CSU-Pueblo wouldn’t score the rest of the game. The Mavs won the game and the RMAC Tournament 9-5. They received the automatic bid to the South Central Regional.

On Sunday night, the Mavs found out they will be hosting the South Central Regional at Sam Suplizio Field. This is a double elimination tournament with six teams. The winner will head to Cary, North Carolina for the Division II World Series. Mesa starts Thursday with Lubbock Christian University located in Lubbock, Texas at 12 P.M. Hopefully, Mesa can earn their way to the Division II World Series for the third time in school history.
