Brandon Marshall’s Massive Payday To Stay With The Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos reached a contract extension with linebacker Brandon Marshall earlier this week. He was set to play in the final year of his previous deal for $2.553 million this season. The new agreement will kick in next year, 4 years, $32 million with $15 million guaranteed.

Marshall is one of Denver’s best inside linebackers. He is a speedy linebacker who can play in coverage as well as rushing the quarterback. Last season, he was a valuable part of the defense, recording 102 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 interception.   In the postseason he assisted Denver with 14 tackles and 1 forced fumble, helping them win the Super Bowl.

At the end of the season, the Broncos knew they wanted to keep Marshall. They gave him a second-round tender, which is worth $2.553 million. This meant if a team wanted to sign him, they would have to give the Broncos a second-round draft pick. That is a high price, even for a solid inside linebacker.

According to Denverpost.com, General Manager John Elway said, “Brandon’s become an integral part of our defense over the last three years and has put in a lot of hard work into becoming such a key player on our team. We congratulate Brandon and look forward to him being a Bronco for many more years.”

ESPN stated that Marshal said, “This is where I want to be, and they’ve always treated me like they want me here, even when I was on practice squad. Everybody wants to win here.”

This was a respectable deal for the Broncos. Marshall plays a large role in the defense.   He can sack the quarterback, stop the opponents running game, and play coverage on passing plays. In the open field, Marshall rarely misses tackling an opponent. He will now be the leader of the defense since Danny Trevathan left to go to Chicago in the offseason.   The Broncos needed to make this move to keep the defense intact. Hopefully, Marshall and this Denver defense will be feared by both opposing quarterbacks and offensive coordinators for years to come. The next step for Denver is to sign Von Miller.
