Boston Bound, Trevor Story Agrees To A Contract With The Red Sox

By Jordan Long

The Boston Red Sox have added a bat to their lineup, Trevor Story.  Story agreed to a 6 year, $140 million contract paying him around $23.33 million a year. His contract includes an opt-out clause in his 4th year and Boston can add a 7th year if Story stays.

Story started his career with the Colorado Rockies in 2016.  He was their everyday shortstop.  Story managed to play 733 games at the position.  During his time with the Colorado Rockies, Story made 66 errors, a fielding percentage of .979.

Last year was  rough for Story in the infield.  He appeared in 138 games for Colorado.  Story had the most errors in his career at the position, 14, far too many.  His fielding percentage was .975.

When it came to his offense, his average was .251, the second lowest in his career. His worst year came in 2017 when Story finished with a .239 batting average.  He could still smack the ball out of the park with 24 home runs and added 75 RBI’s.

Once the 2021 season came to a close, Story knew his days in Colorado were over. The Rockies were moving on from him.  They agreed to a one-year contract with José Iglesias on March 12, 2022.  This pretty much signaled the end of the Story era for the Colorado Rockies.  Behind Iglesias, the Rockies are going to count on Garrett Hampson and Brendan Rodgers.

Story was waiting for a team to pick him up.  The Boston Red Sox decided he was worth a shot.  Story, though, will not play shortstop.  That area of the diamond is covered by Xander Bogaerts.  Story will shift to 2nd base.  Story has never played 2nd base in the Major Leagues.  He was placed at the position during the 2015 season when he was in double and triple A.  At the time the Double-A team of the Rockies was New Britain.  There Story was placed at 2nd for 12 games and made 1 error.  He finished the year in Triple-A with Albuquerque which is still the Rockies Triple-A team.  Story ended up playing at the position for 12 games in Triple A with 1 error. Story will need to adjust his game to play 2nd base and that is what Spring Training is for.

The Red Sox know his offensive numbers should help the team win.  Story is a career .272 hitter.  He is a guy who will hit with power and can smack the ball over the wall with 158 home runs.  Story can drive the ball to the gap for doubles and triples, totaling 180 doubles and 27 triples in his career.  He scores his teammates in with 450 RBI’s.  Those offensive numbers should improve the Red Sox’s chances of winning not only the American League East Division but the World Series as well.  The Red Sox would like nothing more than to win a World Series with him on the team.  They haven’t won it all since 2018.
