Bill Belichick Still Looking For Work, Time For Him To Retire From The NFL

By Jordan Long

The New England Patriots are into a new era hiring Jerod Mayo as Head Coach.  New England parted ways with long time Head Coach Bill Belichick following 24 years.  Now Bill Belichick can’t even get a head coaching job.

Belichick is one of the greatest coaches to ever coach in the NFL.  He spent 1991 to 1995 with Cleveland.  With the Browns, Belichick didn’t have success, going 36-44.  The Browns earned a playoff spot once, 1994.  They were knocked out in the Divisional Round by Pittsburgh.

Cleveland fired him after a 5-11 record in 1995.  He served as the New York Jets defensive coordinator from 1997 to 1999 before taking the head coaching job of the New England Patriots.  He is a Hall of Fame coach with New England.  His tenure lasted 24 years.  His record there was an impressive 266-121, a winning percentage of .687.  In that time New England went to the playoffs 18 times. He went to 8 Super Bowls with New England winning 6.

For the past two years, New England didn’t earn a playoff spot and weren’t competitive. New England went a combined 12- 22.  Owner Robert Kraft decided it was time to part ways with Belichick following a 4-13 finish this season.

With that, Belichick was looking for a job.  According to CBSsports.com, Future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady, who played for Belichick, said, “I don’t know the criteria for hiring coaches. I’ve never been a part of it. I mean, I’m surprised that the greatest coach ever doesn’t have a job, absolutely. But I’m surprised [by] a lot of things in the NFL.”

Belichick wanted to be a general manager as well as head coach and control personnel moves. He did that very well in New England.  Most teams don’t want a coach who is also a general manager.  Typically, they have their own general manager to create the team.

The other problem with Belichick is his age.  He is 71 years old.  It is hard for him to relate to the players these days.  It is probably best for him to retire.  No matter what, Belichick is going to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame at some point even if he doesn’t coach another second.
