Barry Trotz Deserving Of A Contract Extension With The Washington Capitals

By Jordan Long

The Washington Capitals are starting to talk about a contract extension for Head Coach Barry Trotz.   Trotz’s current deal expires July 1st. They still have time to reach an agreement to have him be behind the bench.

According to washingtonpost.com, Trotz said, “I do want to be back. There are some things that we have to work out. I’ve talked to Mac. If we can get them worked out, then there’s no question. I love the group of guys.  I love the situation I’m in with the team, the location for my son and my wife and all that. So all that’s in place.”

The Capitals must have this contract resolved soon. Trotz has been the coach of the Capitals the past 4 years. His record is an impressive 205-89-34, a winning percentage of .677 in the regular season.

The Capitals made the postseason every year under him. Prior to this year, the Capitals were dismissed in the 2nd round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Talks were on hold to see how far the Capitals would go this year. It looked bleak and with another playoff disappointment in their 1st-round matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets down 2-0. They ended up winning 4 games in a row to prevail in series 4-2. That helped the Capitals go all the way to defeat the Las Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final.

Trotz deserves to keep coaching the Capitals. He won a Cup and they look to win back to back championships. The Capitals should have this deal done soon. If they don’t, other NHL teams will want him because of the job he did in Washington. It is a decent start that Trotz is talking with the Capitals, but hopefully this is resolved before July 1st.
