Back To The “Big Apple”, Quarterback Joe Flacco Traded To The Jets

By Jordan Long

The New York Jets sit at 1-5 after a blowout loss to the New England Patriots 54-13.  In the defeat, New York rookie quarterback Zach Wilson was injured during the 2nd quarter.  He will be out 2 to 4 weeks.  The Jets decided to bring back quarterback Joe Flacco.

Wilson was drafted by the New York Jets 2nd overall in this years’ draft.  The Jets thought he could be the franchise quarterback for years to come.  Wilson has looked like a rookie quarterback who is trying to learn to read NFL defenses.  He has thrown into double or triple coverage.  Those passes are easy interceptions for the defensive backs.  Wilson has tossed for 1,168 yards and 4 touchdowns but added 9 interceptions.  It hasn’t been all his fault. His line isn’t protecting him and Wilson has been sacked 19 times.

Before his injury on Sunday, Wilson was 6 of 10 for 51 yards.  He left the game with 12:38 left in the 2nd quarter. The Jets at the time trailed 17-0.  Mike White had his first action in the NFL since he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2018. White passed for 202 yards and 1 touchdown but threw 2 interceptions.  He was also sacked once.

The Jets were lucky the injury wasn’t worse.  Wilson sustained a sprained PCL in his knee.  He will be out for 2 to 4 weeks.

With the injury to Wilson, Mike White is the only active quarterback on the roster.  The quarterback in the practice squad is Josh Johnson.  According to nbcnewyork.com, White said, “I’m confident in myself. I’m mostly confident in the guys we have in that locker room, the leaders we have. The coaching staff, too. Have to make the corrections necessary and keep going and being professionals and working our tails off and trying to get this thing going.”

The Jets decided it was time to make a trade for a veteran quarterback and  made a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles for Joe Flacco.  The Jets received Joe Flacco for a 6th round pick but it can be a 5th-round selection depending on Flacco’s play.

Flacco hasn’t played at all this year, backing up Jalen Hurts.  Flacco is familiar with the Jets since he played for them last season.  In 4 starts with the Jets, his record was 0-4.  He passed for 864 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.  Sure those stats are awful but the only good part about Flacco going back to New York is he knows the playbook.

It is expected that Flacco is going to be the backup to White this weekend when the New York Jets face Cincinnati. If White struggles, Flacco will have his chance to be in the game.  It could be next week against the Indianapolis Colts, Flacco will be the starter for New York.

The Jets know Flacoo may help the quarterback position.  They needed another body and instead of signing one in free agency, Flacco was available. Hopefully, Flacco can improve the position while Wilson is out.
