A.J. Green’s Future With The Cincinnati Bengals Up In The Air At The Conclusion Of The 2019 Season

By Jordan Long

The Cincinnati Bengals are going to miss the NFL playoffs for the 4th straight year.  They have two games left.  Then they will focus on the offseason.  Cincinnati will have many decisions approaching including if they want to keep wide receiver A.J. Green.

Green was supposed to be the #1 wide receiver this season.  He has yet to play because he has been dealing with torn ligaments in his left ankle which occurred in the first practice of the preseason.   He is not going to play in the final two games of the year which might end his time in Cincinnati.

Green is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.    His contract is up and he could leave Cincinnati.   If he does, plenty of teams may be interested in his services.  When healthy, Green is one of the most dangerous receivers in the game.  He creates separation from defensive backs to catch the ball for large chunks of yards or touchdowns.  Green surpassed the 1,000 receiving yard mark 6 times.  He has a total of 8,907 receiving yards and 63 touchdowns in his career.  His average yards per catch is an outstanding 14.8.

There is the possibility Cincinnati keeps Green with the franchise tag with the goal of agreeing to a long-term contract.  According to CBSsports.com, Green said, “I have no problem with the franchise (tag). I don’t like it, but I’m not a guy that’s going to sit out the whole year. But at the end of the day, that shows me they’re not committed to me. That’s fine. They have a business they have to run. As the player I have my own business, so if you do that I have to protect myself.”

Cincinnati will finish off the final two weeks of the year.  They hope to improve their 1-13 record.  Once they play their last game on December 29th against the Browns, it is onto the offseason.  Keeping Green should be on top of their list especially if he proves he is over the ankle injury. If they don’t, quarterback Andy Dalton must find another target to throw to in 2020.
