The Tampa Bay Buccaneers look to bounce back after a tough 29-19 loss to the Washington Football Team. They will take on the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. Tampa Bay will be without cornerback Richard Sherman who is going to miss multiple weeks with a Grade 2 calf strain.
Sherman agreed to a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 29, 2021. It was a one-year deal. Sherman played with San Francisco for the 2020 season, but he missed 11 games dealing with a calf strain. He was placed on injured reserve for it to heal. In 5 games for the 49ers, Sherman didn’t play well with 18 tackles and 1 interception. This wasn’t the production the 49ers wanted from him. San Francisco didn’t sign a new contract with him once the 2020 season was over. He was a free agent.
Sherman had to wait a while before a team came calling. The Buccaneers took a chance on him, signing the cornerback to a 1-year deal worth $2.25 million on September 29th. Tampa Bay was anticipating Sherman would be the veteran cornerback to help this team. Sherman has appeared in 3 games this year for Tampa Bay to this point. He totaled 11 tackles. Sherman has yet to knock a pass away from being caught or intercept the football.
In Tampa Bay’s loss to Washington, Sherman didn’t even play. He ended up hurting his calf during warmups. Tampa Bay missed his presence on the field. They gave up 320 yards including 226 through the air.
The Buccaneers will be without him for an extended amount of time. The timetable for his return to the lineup is unknown. According to Msn.com, Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Head Coach Bruce Arians said, “‘Sherm’ strained his calf before the game. I doubt seriously if he’ll be back anytime soon.”
Sherman may not play again this year depending on how the calf heals. He will need to watch from the sidelines to try to improve the defense. Sherman could tell the defensive players what he is seeing which could help the defensive backs adjust their game. Sherman knows this might be his only year in Tampa Bay. Hopefully, he can come back healthy to help this team make a run to the Super Bowl when they reach the postseason but with his history of injuries who knows if he will be ready.
