The Boston Bruins have agreed to an eight-year extension with forward Brad Marchand. The deal will be worth $49 million with an average salary of $6.125 million per season. It also includes a no-trade clause. ESPN stated that Marchand said, “This is an extremely exciting day for me and my family. I would like to thank the Jacobs family, Cam Neely, Don Sweeney, Claude Julien, the coaching staff, my teammates and our fans for their continued support and belief in me. I have been a Bruin since the start of my pro career and there is no place I would rather play. I look forward to doing everything I can to help our team achieve success and bring the Stanley Cup back to Boston.”
I think this is a decent deal with Marchand. He will be entering his 8th NHL season, all with the Boston Bruins. Marchand has scored 153 goals and 136 assists for a total of 289 points in a Bruins uniform. He is valuable to the Bruins because of his ability to kill penalties and score on the power play. Last season he scored 37 goals, 6 of them came on the power play while 4 were short-handed.
Marchand is not only a great scorer but finds his teammates on the open ice. When he passes to an open teammate it is usually a scoring chance. He is a fast skater and can get behind the defensemen. Sometimes his quickness on the ice leads to breakaways and those usually end in goals.
I am glad the Bruins rewarded one of their best players. It is a lot of money but Marchand is worth it because of his ability to score. The extension will keep Marchand in a Bruins uniform through the 2024-2025 season. The only goal Marchand has in mind is to bring another Stanley Cup to the city of Boston. Hopefully he can deliver.
